Carrum Indigenous Nursery Inc.

Cnr. Patterson & Learmonth Roads, Patterson Lakes, 3197  (Mel 98 A5)

Open Fridays & Saturdays 11 am to 4 pm.  Ph. 9776 0823

The nursery has a large range of  drought tolerant plants indigenous to the Sandbelt area, ranging from grasses up to the big eucalypts. We can provide you with plants that can grow from the coast right up through to the heathlands. Our helpful volunteers can assist you with information about the best species of plants for your garden and how to get the very best out of your selection of plants.

Volunteers are welcome to join us on Fridays between 11 am and 4 pm to help keep grow plants and also learn more about our local species. .

                                                  History

Carrum Residents Action Group (incorporated in 1989) was mainly involved with the former Chelsea and Springvale Councils in
monitoring and modifying development proposals and strategy plans. It was through CRAG's lobbying that Chelsea Council employed a conservation Officer. CRAG members were involved with the preparation of the Chelsea Conservation Strategy during 1993-94, which is now incorporated into Kingston City Councils Corporate Plan.

After publishing "Flowers of the Carrum-Carrum" the need for an
indigenous nursery became apparent, hence the establishment of the
Carrum Indigenous Nursery in 1996 at TAFE College, Bonbeach.

The success of the nursery was recognised with the 1997 Proud City
Award, 2000 Community Group of the Year and 2001 International Year
of the Volunteers.

Over the years many volunteers have grown tens of thousands of plants
for various local projects. The nursery is currently hosting a work
for the dole project, two schools programs including a team from
Naranga Special School.

With the closure of Bonbeach TAFE a new home for the nursery needed
to be found. This proved difficult and 5 months after the moving
deadline a site still had not been secured and the TAFE was being
demolished around us. Finally the present site at Learmonth Reserve
was secured. The site is Council owned, but zoned Flood Plain and
subject to conditions set down by Melbourne Water.
